Apple Trade-in - Serial number not recognised?

I am contemplating a new iPad mini but when I try the trade in process for a newish iPad pro, it doesn't appear to recognise the device.

It is the latest ipad pro 11 inch gen 3 and although I purchased it through Amazon (for quicker availability) I believe it is a fully fledged apple model - the Apple warranty page does recognise it and shows it correctly within its warranty period.

Is it the case that Apple don't allow trade ins of the latest or current models in each category?

PS: There is no appropriate topic for trade-in or apple purchasing issues.

Yes, I think that might be the problem.

Thanks - not really covered in the FAQs, and it doesn't help that the site elsewhere says 'Trade in any device in any condition...'

Online chat was not very definitive but he agreed that the store behaviour isn't helpful - when you start the trade in and put in the serial number, it just doesn't recognise the device. It would be better if it recognised the device but said 'this device is not eligible' or something more more helpful.
