Your Apple Watch MUST be paired to your iPhone in order to setup the watch. Until it has been setup the watch is non-functional and only knows how to pair with an iPhone.

If you have a new iPhone replacing an older iPhone you probably need to erase the watch before you can pair to the new phone. Post back with more info if this is the case and we can try to offer more detailed guidance.
