Call volume too loud (facetime, mobile, whatsapp, facetime) when using headphones

Hi All

Call volume cannot be turned down to a comfortable level when I make a call using headphones on my iphone 12 mini.

Sound volume is fine using headphones on music playback, TV, youtube, radio, podcasts etc. I can turn it down to silence using the side volume controls normally.

Call volume is fine but ONLY when using the speaker.

Call volume is UNCOMFORTABLY loud using headphones and cannot be turned down further.

This happens using iphone earbuds, Beats by Dr Dre, Sennheiser. Happens on wired and bluetooth headphones. I've tired a number of sets.

This headphone issue happens regardless of the type of call Facetime, 5g mobile, whatsapp, zoom.

I can use the headphones on radio, then if I take a call without changing the volume, the call volume is much louder than the radio. When the call ends the radio remains at the original volume.

My phone carrier did not supply the handset. My phone carrier does not offer app support for Zoom or Facetime etc. My phone carrier does not support headphone issues. My phone carrier does not support Apple hardware volume settings. The call/headphone volume issue persists with the sim removed and using only Wifi. The problem isn't the carrier...

Is any help available? I need somehow to set the standard rage of volume for calls to be the same as the range of volume for audio playback.

Thank you

iPhone 12 mini

Hey Londoniphone12,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities! We understand the volume on phone calls, while using headphones, is too loud and you're unable to adjust it. Let's help.

Checking out Adjust the volume on iPhone, do you have 'Change with Buttons' turned on or off? Have you checked the settings mentioned in this article, to see if they pertain to your issue: Customize headphone audio levels on your iPhone or iPad

Which iOS version are you running under Settings > General > Software Update? Do you see any pending updates there? If so, if you update the iOS does that help solve the behavior?

Keep us posted.

Best regards.

Londoniphone12,

Got it. Well if those suggestions did not work out well enough to assist, we would have you consider having your iPhone inspected and evaluated in person at your local Apple Store Store List - Apple Store - Apple, or Apple Authorized Service Provider Apple - Find Locations - Location Selector. Or, reach out to discuss options here: Contact - Official Apple Support.

Take care.

Hi Sharon

Thanks for your response.

The up/down side buttons work fine.

The problem is that the minimum audio settings only on headphones+calls is too loud. I can make it crazy loud by pressing the up button, and bring it down to just "uncomfortable" using those, so I think that buttons work fine. Just no matter how often or hard I press, I can't get the lowest volume (on calls+headphones) quiet enough.

I am using ios 15.1. Updated last night, still the problem exists.

I don't want to adjust the volume on everything, playback+headphones and calls+speaker are both fine.

Just would like to adjust the range of sound on the headphones when making calls.
