I need to free up space on my MacBook air and have room on my iCloud account but cannot figure out how to ge it there. I have the settings set to optimise storage but that is not doing what i need. Any suggestions?

what suggestions do you have for freeing up space on the MacBook and still having access through iCloud storage?

There are two Optimize options.

One is for iCloud Photos -- open the Photos app, click Preferences on the Photos menu, click iCloud at the top of the Preferences window, click Optimize Mac Storage. Also see: Set up and use iCloud Photos - Apple Support

The other is for iCloud Drive -- it is at Apple menu > System Preferences > Apple ID > iCloud (in the sidebar) > Optimize Mac Storage
