iPod Touch 2021

I'm a die hard iPod user.

I am not married to a mobile or cellular phone.

I think Apple is overlooking a large number of us who love iPods.

When I looked outside of Apple, there are a ton of devices available for streaming music.

What I can't tell is whether they will play audiobooks and podcasts as well.

Can anyone tell me, since Apple is obviously uninterested in continuing iPods?

iPod, iOS 12

I don't mean to offend you, but that's not a complete question. Can anybody tell you "what"?

Consequently, I read it (based on the previous sentence in your original post) as "can anybody tell me whether competitors' products can play audiobooks and Podcasts?"

Let's try to address your current points:

A. I was hoping someone on an Apple "forum" could tell me why Apple seems uninterested in continuing iPods.
B. I'm surprised no one else on an Apple forum would even have a comment on it.

Any suggestions on that subject would be speculation, which Apple actively discourage. It could lead to removal of the post, or even suspension from the forum. If I'm going to be suspended from the forum, it won't be for speculating on this topic.

By the way, forum is correct, so no need to put it in quotes as though you don't believe it. Look up the Wikipedia definition of the original forum - the Forum (Roman) from which, as far as I'm aware, all other types of forum are derived.

Or tell me there are plans to make something else.

Again, that at calls for speculation - a subject we've covered.

A. Or even tell me what the replacement is for iPods, if that is what Apple has done.
B. Are they rolling out something else?

iPhone, iPad, streaming services. Take your pick.

For me, the silence means, that's it for iPods, Apple has no interest continuing them.

No. It means that Apple is doing what they always do; not pre-announce, discourage speculation and not giving their competitors a heads up.

Am I the last person with an iPod, wishing it would update?

Probably not. Personally, I prefer to keep my music player separate from my phone, but even if I weaken on that matter, I already have (and I'm very happy with) an Android device for phone calls. iPad? I simply don't have a need for one and as for streaming services, my large collection of purchased music, collected over many years, satisfies my tastes so I have no need to pay again for access to something I already have. Not that my preferences on the subject will help you.

It's your choice:

  • stick with an iPod. In all this discussion, you appear to have overlooked the fact that Apple still sell an iPod, the iPod Touch 7th generation. iPod touch - Apple
  • buy an iPhone or iPad
  • do some constructive research into products from other companies

The current iPod Touch will update to iOS 15. Note though, that your computer will have to be Windows 10 as the version of iTunes required to recognise iPods with iOS 15 will not work on Windows 7 (or 8) machines.

Here's a link to Apple's terms of use for this community; Apple Support Communities Use Agreement - Apple Community.

Section B.1, B.1.i and B.1.ii are specifically about speculation. Section A.4 lets you know that views expressed here (by me, or anyone else responding to you) are not endorsed by Apple.

While we can talk about competitor's products (the Walkman that you mentioned), my point was that you are more likely to get answers about competitor's products from websites devoted to those products, rather than here. But from the sound if it, you're going to investigate the 7th gen iPod Touch. I hope it will meet your requirements.

Your question is based on finding out about products other than Apple's, but since this is a community of people who know about Apple products rather than the ones you're trying to find about about, it can hardly be a surprise that you've received no replies.

Your question is disingenuous.

P.S. I'm convinced this is not "communities" so much as it poses as that so that reps can come and go at their leisure to answer or ignore at their leisure.

This is a user-to-user forum, where you will find a community of enthusiasts who try to help their fellow users with problems related to Apple products. Apple publicly state as much. No one here, including any reps (by which I assume you mean Apple employees) is obliged to respond to your post. Your fellow users (such as myself) do not represent Apple.

It would make far more sense if you were to seek advice from forums for the products you are interested in, rather than ones you're not.

THANK YOU the fiend! You answered my questions.

#1. I had no idea that "speculation" meaning talking about "do you know what Apple will do with...." fill in the blank was a banable offense! That alone, was very helpful.

#2. I didn't actually say "competitor's products" but I didn't know how else to say it except to ask "who else" might carry podcasts and books, which is what I use my iPod for primarily, as well as music. So I appreciate you very much explaining to me that that is also a dangerous thing to mention on these forums. (I had no idea of all these rules!)

#3. The iPhone or iPad was a good suggestion, though I did try to express that I am a die hard iPod user not at all a die hard iPhone or cell phone user. So I went on reading, because you were so helpful.

#4 About discouraging speculation because of "not giving their competitors a heads up." I'm not in sales. So I really am dumb when it comes to all that. I am just a customer. My apologies to you but especially to Apple for again, making a blunder I had no idea I was making. That was helpful. I wonder, is there a link to all these rules? Or are they just "known"?

#5 "Am I the last person with an iPod, wishing it would update?" Thank you so much for your answer. Because one, I see that no, I am not. However, what I was missing was that there IS an iPod 7!!!! That's good news. Do you happen to know if it updates to iOS 15? I love iPods and do not wish to give them up. But my old iPod 6 won't update far enough. I have a ton of audio books and I've been getting warnings that at the end of this month (November 2021) which is only 3 days away now, they are going to shut off my access to all my library! It's bad news for me with only an old iPod 6.

If the iPod 7 updates to iOS 15 I need to get one PRONTO!

I will mark your answer as solving my question, because you did answer my questions! All of them.

Your answering of the questions in this post, is of course, totally up to you.

Again, thank you so much for explaining all that to me. And if there is a link that will tell me what is "okay" to talk about and what is not "okay" to talk about (beyond obvious civility) I would really appreciate it. You rock!
