Safari is buggy and oftentimes unusable with multiple windows open (macOS 12.0.1)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJIJWyD5sbQ (a YouTube video of my screen recording to display the issues.)

Background:

I have an M1 powered MacBook Air running macOS 12.0.1. Safari was unresponsive, so I quit Safari and opened it again, and reopened all windows from my previous session (Safari > History > Reopen All Windows From Last Session), as I would do with no issues on macOS Big Sur. However, I noticed some strange things happening after this.

What I have tried so far (without the issues being solved):

  • Restarting my MacBook Air
  • Force quitting Safari, and opening it again as usual
  • Opening a second window without reopening all windows from my previous session

Issues:

  • Whenever my cursor hovers and moves over a text field (on Safari only), it flickers from the I-beam pointer and the Arrow pointer until I stop moving the cursor. (Below shows what I-beam and Arrow pointers look like if you are unaware.)
    • When I stop the cursor from moving on a text field, the cursor displays the Arrow pointer, but it is supposed to display the I-beam pointer.
  • When I move to a second open window in Safari (with a different Tab Group opened on the second window), additional issues appear.
    • Either the tab bar or the search bar (or both) of certain tabs will appear blank even though a website is open in them.
    • When I click the search bar and type something in it, Safari will not show me any suggestions based on bookmarks, history, etc.
    • Sometimes, when I search something in the search bar nothing will happen, but when I type in a website then it will open a website; I have to type in "google.com" just to search something on Google, when I should be able to just type it in the search bar.
    • Sometimes I cannot open the Sidebar, either.
    • Sometimes Safari just goes unresponsive.

Does anyone know how I might be able to fix this?

Greetings technicallytyguy,

We understand you’re encountering some things in Safari that you’re not expecting.

Let’s further isolate what’s happening. we’d like to have you boot to safe mode and test things there, then also create a new admin user and see if the situation persists there as well.

How to use safe mode on your Mac

Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

Thank you.

technicallytyguy,

This is good to know. Let’s next have you disable or remove any extensions set up in Safari from Safari > Preferences, then click Extensions. Please do all of them and we can then work to add them back a few at a time. Once disabled/removed, quit Safari and test again. Any change?

Additionally, we’d like to have you clear Safari’s website data Clear your browsing history in Safari on Mac.

Thanks.
