Can a usb flash drive be used as a bootable backup?

Looking at the SanDisk 256GB Extreme PRO USB 3.2 Solid State Flash Drive, 256GB, to back up a 120GB Macbook Air.

MacBook Air 11″, macOS 10.14

Hi,

Yes, you can if your macOS is 10.14.

Try to create bootable clone drive on USB drive with SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner.

It could, but it would be really slow compared to an external SSD.
