How can I get the air play icon to display on my iPad?
iPad mini, iOS 10
AirPlay is accessed from the Control Centre (swipe downwards from the top-right corner of the screen) - or from within an App that supports AirPlay.
The AirPlay icon is substantially different from the Share icon that your describe.

I can’t find the air play icon on my iPad. When I click the box with the little up arrow on it it brings up airdrop and messages and other options but AirPlay is not one of them.
