I'm not aware that Apple publishes the finish other than that the Pro Models are stainless as opposed to Aluminum on the standard 13. And any stainless steel can scratch, PVD coated or not. Whichever iPhone you purchase, if you don't put it in a case, and it gets scratches, that's cosmetic and not covered under warranty, so you'll have to live with the scratches if you get them. Why spend that much money on a phone and not spend a few more dollars to put it in a nice protective case? You should also invest in a screen protector to protect the screen from scratches, which are inevitable without a screen protector.
Apple doesn't publish whether the Stainless is coated or not. I just get the color I want, put a good quality screen protector on and a good quality case on before the phone is ever powered on the first time.
I've owned all the latest Pro Max phones with stainless and have had numerous colors including silver and using a good qulaity case like a Spigen with TP sides, I've never scratched any of them on the sides.
It is stainless steel. Whether it is coated or not, stainless steel can scratch. Spending this much money on a phone whether coated or not should be in a nice case to protect the phone.
Ok so here is what I know pertaining to the silver … even in a case the prior models stainless steel frame would still scratch even with a case .. and sometimes switching cases as well as some cases cause scratches! I cannot speak upon the 13 pro and if it has a better pvd coating this year! I’ve heard that it does but will have to see for myself to confirm. While all the pros currently have a stainless steel frame they aren’t as easily scratched like the silver..while using a case. I want a silver pro max and I hope the frame holds up like the other colors this year
Every single silver iPhone I too have owned since the 10 and the stainless steel scratching has always been an issue with or without a case
I have very good vision and an eye for detail so I notice everything that many overlook..! Sometimes right out of the box brand new there were micro scratches..This is well known issue
But I guess with cases It doesn't noticeable at all.
I know that Silver from previous models has no PVD coating which resulted for minor to heavy scratches, I'am confuse right now because I saw some comments that iPhone 13 pro max in Silver is now PVD coated same with the other colors. If this is the case I might get the silver one.
based on some comments, the other three colors (Graphite, Sierra Blue and Gold) are PVD coated which minimize the scratching . However some say that Silver on iPhone 13 does have PVD coating. I wanted the Silver one but just worried on scratches
