“Cannot connect to App Store”

I bought a refurb MacBook Pro at 10.8.5 and I’m connected to internet and my apple account. But when I try to go to the App Store to download the update I get a response that says “cannot connect to App Store”. What can I do about this

This is the complete procedure that SHOUL have been down before sale:

What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac - Apple Support

The part you MUST do is to restart in Internet recovery USING Shift-Option-Command-R and re-install the MacOS version (tagged only with the serial Number of your Mac) that initially shipped on your Mac. You may have to ERASE the drive in Internet recovery before installing.

--------

You can not get any other versions, because: MacOS is tagged with the Apple-ID of the person who downloaded it (the seller) and without their password, you can not download anything new.

That OS was introduced in 2012,so what exact model/year is your Mac? Go to the Apple in upper left corner and click on "about this mac". Post back with relevant information - model, year, etc. It depends on the Mac and the OS version to see if it can be upgraded. So, the Mac may be 9 years old. Hope you didn't pay a lot for that.
