If you're planning on using a MacBook Pro for software development, you should configure your MacBook Pro with M1 Pro. Software development is dependent on CPU speed, not GPU, and M1 Pro and M1 Max have the same 8 performance cores for CPU tasks.

For more power, you should configure M1 Pro with 10 cores instead of 8 cores if you need it. It's also important consider how much unified memory you need in your computer. The more memory you have, the more apps you can run simultaneously and the better they will perform. You can't upgrade memory after your time of purchase. MacBook Pro comes with 16 GB of memory by default, but you can configure your computer with 32 GB or 64 GB or memory if you need it.

I would recommend 32 GB of memory if you're building larger apps with Xcode. I would strongly consider if you really need 64 GB of memory, because you'll also need to upgrade to M1 Max to upgrade to 64 GB of memory, which could be a very pricey upgrade for diminishing returns.
