When I go to sleep and leave my phone alone I often wake up and find that the home and Lock Screen has been active at various times during the night despite me not having touched my phone.
can anyone tell me why this is?

Hello Mjolnir123,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
If we understand your post correctly, when you go to sleep and leave the phone alone you often wake up and find that the Home and Lock Screen have been active at various times during the night. We'd like to help!
You may want to try disabling Background App Refresh temporarily, as a test, to see if that is causing your phone to be active when you're sleeping: Maximizing Battery Life and Lifespan
"Background Activity. This indicates that the battery was used by the app while it was in the background — that is, while you were using another app.

Hello Mjolnir123,
Thanks for getting back to us!
Are you receiving any notifications when the Home Screen and Lock Screen activates?
Thanks!
That doesn’t really help.
I want to know why the Home and lock Screen are showing up when I’m not touching my phone.
that only shows up in battery use when you pick up your phone and the Home Screen activates.
seeing as I’m asleep this is impossible…
im aware things run in the background.
but why home and Lock Screen??
Not always no.
Hello Mjolnir123,
When you see that the Home and Lock Screen have been activated, what do you see that you determined that these screens were activated.
Thanks!
