Old messages will be in your backup unless you use Messages in iCloud. Restore your phone from the backup.

If you use messages in iCloud, your messages will return once you log into your Apple ID. Verify your settings at Settings > Apple ID > iCloud

Are you using a different AppleID with messaging that you’re using with iCloud? If so, then your messages were not sync’d to iCloud, nor were they included in your iCloud backup. To sync data, or to be included in a backup, the messaging app must be using the same AppleID as you use for iCloud.

Go to Settings > Apple ID and sign out, then sign back in.
