Why Has My 2020 M1 MacBook Air Run Out of Application Memory??

My New MacBook Air (M1, 2020), macOS Big Sur 11.6.1 with 16 GB Memory is suddenly reporting that "Your system has run out of application memory" - suggesting "To avoid problems with your computer, quit any applications you are not using."

The popup window lists the names of a half dozen running apps along with their MB memory usage.

I've been quitting apps, trying to concentrate on those using the most memory and not in immediate use. But, I am not able to to really correct the situation.

Googling for solutions brings up the usual collection of helpful (TIC) ads for disk and memory "cleaners". I am new to the Apple world having jumped over from Windows 10 a few months ago. I do I figure out what's happening and what I can do to alleviate???

I will greatly appreciate any and all assistance!

Suggest downloading the Application Etrecheck directly from a well Respected ASC Contributor.

The application is free or paid from added features.

Run the application with Full Disc Access ( Security & Privacy - Full Disc Access ).

It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software.

The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information.

Post back the Full Report - copy and paste - using the Additional Text Icon ( 3rd Icon to last )

We can have a look at the report for possible issues and may have possible suggestions to resolve the issues.

Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS, alter, modify, remove or delete or attempt to do so is an invitation for disaster and may require a Reinstallation of the OS.

This includes AntiVirus, Disk Cleaners, Disk Optimizes, UnInstaller etc.

This will include CleanMyMac

The The Built in Security  is all that is required.

I have the 8g version of the M1MacBook. I haven’t upgraded yet to Monterrey. Yesterday, I got the error message interrupting a search session on Safari, specifically on Zillow. The warning said—basically—that my laptop would explode into the stratosphere unless I quit Safari (I’d already closed everything else, except the finder). Safari quit itself, finally.

weird that Safari, a native app, causes memory issues of that magnitude. I’ve been a ridiculously active researcher forever, with insane numbers of Safari tabs open, but only in this new M1 have I ever run into this issue.

I’m running 11.6 and I haven’t altered anything about the cursor; I checked to be sure.

I’ve had the issue with Safari since I purchased the computer. Unlike my previous 2011 MacBook Pro, this MacBook cannot tolerate multiple tabs opened at the same time. I don’t do any of the sorts of things I associate with heavy use, such as video editing or gaming. My cardinal sin has always been excessive research on multiple subjects at a time. Maybe I just have the wrong computer for what I do, cause I’ll probably never solve my bad habits.

I did not upgrade yet (I generally always upgrade), because although my laptop is set up for auto-updating, it does not do so. Another of its glitches.

Thanks, but I don’t want to add more software to the computer, particularly not anti-virus software, since I’m having memory issues. I noticed that my computer was not auto-updating, so I installed the upgrades and tested it on a call with tech support, with around 10 tabs open to typically heavy memory sites like Zillow and YouTube, and I couldn’t reproduce the issue. So I’m considering upgrading to Monterrey, once I read it isn’t buggy. It was frustrating to be unable to reproduce the issue while I had Apple screen-sharing. I’ve left the Activity Monitor open to continue observing. So far so good. But—it was always intermittent and unexpected, so I expect it’ll happen again.

Never. No system is 100% buggy free. There will always be some combination of software that will not work smoothly with the system.

I don't down what your needs are but I have no problems with Monterey at this time.

twice when I left Activity Monitor open, it's one of the sites my computer demanded I close due to the Application error.

By sites are you referring to a website in Safari or whatever browser you're using?

I know, I feel the same way, piece of Junk! My work computer is a Delliquah, and she works flawless, even with a i3 processor. I upgraded the ram myself to 16gbs and Windows 10 Pro. Flies and no issues whats-so-ever. I will not believe the YouTube reviewers hype anymore when it comes to Apple Products. They look like, but sometimes have half baked hardware, and lately, crappy OSs.

I also have the Macbook Air M1chip with 16GB of memory, as of late last year when I got it, and started getting the application memory issue all the time the last two weeks. NEVER had this problem with my Macbook Pros.

And sadly, my understanding it that we can NOT add any more memory to the 2020 Macbook Air. I regret ever buying this laptop and wish I had stuck to the Macbook Pro.

Was also told by Apple to upgrade to Monterey.
