Upgrading or buying new.

This is what I have right now. My questions are what os can I upgrade to without it slowing everything down. Also if I were to buy a macbook pro, could I hook it up to this computer and use this computer as a screen for the macbook pro?

iMac 27″, OS X 10.11

Ok, then I believe you have a couple (maybe a few more) choices, going forward:

  • Option#1: Upgrade to macOS Catalina directly onto this Mac's internal drive.
  • Option#2: Create bootable version of macOS Catalina on an external SSD drive. You can then boot up from this external drive and check the overall performance of your Mac to see if it still meets your requirements. If it doesn't, then "no harm done." (See the last two articles below.)

In theory, this iMac model can be upgraded to 10.15.7 (macOS Catalina). Whether or not, it will "slow things down" will be subjective. ,It appears that your Mac has plenty of RAM memory @ 32 GBs, so the only other thing would be the internal drive. is is a HDD or SSD? (This Mac model had quite a few drive options.) Regardless, how much remaining storage space does it have?

I believe that the original SATA HDDs run at 7200 rpm ... which would be respectable.

FWIW, this iMac model also uses a blade SSD. However adding/replacing one would be considered difficult; whereas, the HDD would be significantly easier, but still not easy. One of the biggest hurdles is separating the display from the case.

It really comes down (to me) to two things:

  1. Are you happy with the overall performance of this iMac now?
  2. Are you budget-limited in considering getting a current model? 2013 is a "century ago" when it comes to computing.

Thanks for the laugh..."century ago". So true when it comes to computers. My 2013 macbook died. I stupidly replaced it with a surface pro...Hated it. Gave it to my son for his business. My imac is still healthy but I do like to have a laptop when I go away or when I cannot sleep and don't want to get out of bed. No I am not budget limited. I just thought I could kill two birds with one stone and get a new macbook and hook it up to the old imac.
