First make sure to have a good backup before attempting to upgrade macOS just in case something goes wrong.


Next make sure all your third party apps are 64 bit since Catalina no longer supports 32 bit apps. If you still use 32 bit apps, then see if there are any updates or newer versions of those 32 bit apps and update those apps to 64 bits. If you have any 32 bit third party apps that don't have 64 bit versions available, then it is best to uninstall them by following the developer's instructions before you upgrade macOS.

You should always have frequent and regular backups.


Edit: A 2014 laptop can run up to macOS 11.x Big Sur.
