Should I disconnect external peripherals before upgrading?
I have been following these discussions waiting for the "right time" to upgrade and I wonder if it would make any difference if one disconnect all external peripherals, installed Monterey, reinstalled peripherals one at a time.

As Lanny said it's not necessary. I have 6 EHDs, all SSD but one, and have no problems installing with them connected.
Just make sure you hav an Apple SSD installed internally, it is required since the Monterey upgrade for some Macs needs to write to the disk to to a firmware update prior to the software upgrade.
