Disconnect external peripherals prior to installing Monterey
Has anyone tried disconnecting everything except the keyboard and mouse, installing Monterey, and then re-installing all the external devices one at a time?

I only have an DVI monitor and my Time Machine connect to my M1 iMac so I didn't disconnect, but I think it is a good idea if you've had problems with the peripherals.
I do close all running apps before updating. I did it just now and installation went well.
As did iOS, iPadOS and WatchOS.

I have never removed any external hardware when updating and no issues.
Personally, alway disconnect any external anything except the KB and Mouse.
Anything that may or may not interfere with the installation process is worth disconnecting
