Disconnect external peripherals prior to installing Monterey

Has anyone tried disconnecting everything except the keyboard and mouse, installing Monterey, and then re-installing all the external devices one at a time?

Mac Pro, macOS 11.6

I only have an DVI monitor and my Time Machine connect to my M1 iMac so I didn't disconnect, but I think it is a good idea if you've had problems with the peripherals.

I do close all running apps before updating. I did it just now and installation went well.

As did iOS, iPadOS and WatchOS.
