I have Apple care for my iPad does it matter who brings it in to get it fixed ?

Well, I am not sure, but - you do need to make an appointment for the Genius Bar online and that has to be in your name/Apple ID. There may be some clue there while you are doing that. Use the get support link in the upper right corner to get the process started.
