Airpods grayed out - Airpods not able to work in Garageband for mac

I am on the go and the microphone in the airpods is currently the best one I have. However, Garageband seems to be unable to connect with airpods.

I have tried the following:

  • making sure the airpods are connected in bluetooth
  • making sure airpods are both the input and output devices in garageband / preferences

I have also tried restarting my Mac, turning my bluetooth on and off, and disconnecting and reconnecting the airpods, but nothing works. When I try to record in garageband, I cannot select airpods as input:

garageband ver 10.4.4

macos 11.3.1

Intel 2018 Macbook pro

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.3

Hey there ntlarry,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. The following article states, “You can connect a microphone to an audio input port, USB port, or other port on your computer, or to an audio interface connected to your computer. You can also use your computer’s built-in microphone to record sound.” It doesn’t mention Bluetooth and this may be why you’re not able to use your AirPods. You can read more here:

Connect a microphone to use with GarageBand on Mac

Just to be sure, you can reach out to Apple Support at the following link so they can look further into this with you:
