Cents or dollars - formula

Would it be possible to create a formula that would display a figure in dollars unless it fell below a dollar, then it would multiply it by 100 and display it in cents?

I know how to create a custom data format that uses the cent symbol. But any formula to automatically multiple the number if below a dollar and change the data type is beyond me.

Hi there!

If you’re purely trying to solve for how it looks, and don’t expect to be able to calculate off of the results, here’s how you can do it:

  1. Create a new Sheet and Table.
  2. In cell A1 enter the dollar amount (start with 1.23 as an example)
  3. In cell B1 enter the following formula: IF(A1≥1,"$"&A1,(A1×100)&"¢") — B1 should now be $1.23
  4. Now, change A1 to .40 — B1 should now be 40¢

Hope this helps!

Misleading at best. 0.35 is $0.35 or 35¢. 0.35¢ is a little more than one third of a penny.

That said, this looks like an editing error in the text, as the examples in the screen shot show standard formats for all four examples.
