Apple ID on second device

My husband has his own Apple ID on his phone now. For some reason we did not change his iPad at the same time. It has my ID. I’m trying to change his iPad to accept His ID. When I enter his email address it tells me the email address is not available, choose another one. I’m not wanting to set up New address, but an Existing one that is currently being used on his phone. I don’t want him to lose any data either.

Can anyone Please help?

Thanks, Kim 😁

When changing to the new ID, there may be some data loss, but you can minimize it. If syncing photos with iCloud, ensure Optimization is turned off in Settings/Your Name/iCloud/Photos and/or in Photos/Preferences/iCloud. Then make sure full resolution photos are on the device/computer. When signing out of iCloud, if asked whether you want to retain data, choose yes. Messages conversations will be lost if they are addressed to the ID. See the article below for other places that the old ID should be removed. See Winston Churchill's response in the below discussion. If possible, also set up Family Sharing  between the IDs to keep access to your apps/purchases.

If the device is logged into your Apple ID there will not be any of his data to be lost, all the data is yours as it is tied to your Apple ID. But, as always, backup the device first. If you have iCloud enabled and syncing your device, all data on the iPad is already being synced to your Apple ID. If you have elected not to use some iCloud services, those items will remain in the device backup.

For example. If there are photos on this iPad not in your iCloud photos account, because you do not have iCloud photos enabled, that really belong to your husband. You may wish to export those to his phone first so that they will be on his Apple ID.

That doesn't matter. It's tied to the Apple ID that is currently logged into the iPad. If everything is synced in iCloud, he'll need to pull the data down from that account into his Apple ID for it to be his data. So, if there are a lot of documents in iCloud, photos, etc. He'll need to move those out of the current ID and into his. That might take some time but the data can be transferred from the iPad to his iPhone through Airdrop, email, etc.

If everything is in iCloud (go to iCloud.com) to check, then you can log out and he can log in at any time. Although it might be easier to move from device to device.
