Why is my phone discharging rapidly after latest update? Note I have background app refresh off on all but a few (5 or less) apps. Please advise.

Have a read through Apple's documentation about batteries. iPhone Battery and Performance - Apple Support
I, personally, have seen odd behavior, including abnormal charging/discharging for batteries that report a capacity in the high 70% range. Apple can perform diagnostics and provide further advice.

In Settings>Battery>battery health, what's listed for Maximum Capacity?
If this is under 80%, you need a new battery.

No but this was not happening until after the update. Perfect example from my initial post regarding this issue, my phone was at 100% with the charger attached. After posting I removed the cord at the time of this reply my phone was showing 52%. Note I turned off the “optimized battery charging” feature till tomorrow at the on set of the aforementioned charge cycle that indicated 100%. I turned the feature off thinking maybe the phone is not fully charging since it’s not the time the system has decided to fully charge my phone. Obviously that wasn’t the case. Please advice.
Forgot to mention my spouse who also has the same iPhone 7 is also experiencing this bizmare battery drainage. The difference between our phone is that he replaced his battery at the Apple store about 8 months ago.
Once again I do not believe this a battery issue it’s a glitch with the update maybe only affecting iPhone 7 and older. Please advice.

As an update my phone now seems to be discharging at a more normal rate.
Once again an example since the last posting I had to connect back up because the phone was at 10%. Before I was able to attach the charge cable the battery indicator cascaded in front of my eyes to 1% at a similar cadence to a launch count down and shut it self off.
To answer your question my phone indicates 77%. In my humble opinion 77% is not an indication that you must change your battery. I’m probably wrong but my interpretation of the maximum capacity as currently stated for my phone is that it’s at 77% battery hold capacity when compared to a new battery. To my interpretation (this is only an example) this means that if the phone would take 60 minutes to discharge from 100% to 0% with a brand new battery now it would take 42 minutes. Although that was just an example regarding those times it does even give me 42 minutes with the charge cable unplug. This began within a day of the update and progressively declining on battery capacity time.
Note I’m not a heavy phone user nor do I constantly have my phone charging. I normally charge my phone overnight and that will last till the next charge with a minimum of 25% +\- 5% with the rare but infrequent 10%. Please advise
