I was in the middle of problem solving and imessage was behaving erratically. It was disruptive to my communication and actually obstructed resolution to a time critical issue. Both parties have iphone.

second, i have a small text indicating the number of replies (?) but not showing me these messages until I tap on that information.

Hello retireD62,

We understand the importance of having iMessages available and working as you'd expect them to. We'll be glad to help.

Is this occurring with one contact or all of the iMessage conversations on your iPhone? Sometimes powering off and restarting can help refresh your apps, connection, and help resolve this. Please follow the guidance here: Restart your iPhone

Does the entire conversation disappear from your iPhone, or only one message?

Do you know if you are using iMessages in iCloud? You can check by going to Settings > [your name] > iCloud. See if Messages is switched on there.

Use Messages in iCloud

How much storage is available on your iPhone? Sometimes not having enough storage may cause these types of issues. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage to check. If you're running out of storage on your iPhone, the guidance here can help: How to check the storage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Take care./

retireD62,

We appreciate the update and screenshot you provided.

We can see you're replying to a specific message in the conversation. This is explained in section "Reply to a specific message in a conversation" here: Send a message to a group or business on iPhone - Apple Support

If you're still experiencing the same issues, please reach out to Apple directly: Get Support

Kind regards.

Thanks for your feedback. I do appreciate your trying to help me. I have read all that you pointed me to, and I understand better from where this issue is coming. What I do not understand is how a 2 party message thread can react as if it were a group message.

Before I go to Apple Support, one more input for you. I do not understand why imessage actively reacted as if this is a group conversation with inline features. It is one conversation with only 2 participants. I have activated inline messaging. I do not understand how it is even possible that my phone reacts as if it were a group conversation.

Thanks for your help.
