Not a helpful response for those that aren't computer science majors. Apple needs to lay out the basics.

Hello trout818,

Thanks for reaching out in Apple Support Communities with your question about iCloud Private Relay.

We’re happy to lend a hand, and the article associated with your post, About iCloud Private Relay is a great resource for this.

If your home network is managed by your internet provider, you will want to speak with them. If you manage your home network, then you need to speak with the manufacturer of the router or modem used when setting up your network.

Reach back out anytime you have questions.

Have a great weekend!

I did get it to work. I note that Netgear will not support Private Relay in that it competes with their Armor and they have a discussion on that. Maybe rebooting my router did it. I did turn off and UPnP. Also I had assumed that my router was running MU-MIMO and it wasn't. Turning that on has helped by system quite a bit. In the end, I now believe Private Relay works with home routers. You have to turn off other security - really choose what you want.

Hi trout818,

I had the same problem, I resolved by updating the firmware on my ASUS router. If you manage your own router I recommend this as the first step. If they does not solve the problem, I recommend the following actions is order:

  1. Contact your router manufacture and see if they have fix. They may have a software update pending.
  2. If you use QoS (Quality of Service) on your router, temporarily turn it off. See if that resolves
  3. If you use any form of child/family safety systems on your router that block access based on family membership, temporarily turn it off. See if the problem resolves.

In items 2 and 3 your router is filtering or prioritizing network traffic based on it’s content or destination. Your router might be telling your Apple device that it won’t allow PrivateRelay traffic because it can’t evaluate it, for QoS or Family Security. Your router vendor should update the firmware to accommodate Private Relay even if you have these setting on.
