Can't close spaces

Under Monterey (12.0.1), SPACES no longer have the close (x) button in top left corner - just an expand button. How the heck do I close one when no longer needed?

Revised - F3 key and all Space appear in very top. Mouse over the unneeded Space and the X appear top left and click it - presto
