iOS 15 muted messages

I do not use the focus feature that apple has recently come out with. I turned notifications off on a conversation with a person who also has an iPhone. They are able to see that I am not receiving messages. I have tried going through the focus section in settings and it was not turned on or shared across my devices. I went to messages in my settings and I had not allowed messages to access my focus status even though I’m not using one. I went to privacy then focus and turned it off. They are still able to see that I have them muted (not receiving notifications). How do I turn this feature OFF without turning my notifications for that conversation back on?

Hello Claire,

We see that this isn't regarding read receipts, although that may be something worth looking into as another option.

Upon researching a bit, while you mentioned you're not using Focus, it does sound like what is described under the third paragraph in the section 'Turn on Focus' here: Use Focus on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

From your screenshot, this looks like it may be expected behavior. To confirm, which exact steps did you take to turn off notifications for that contact?

If you have a compatible model, the latest version is iOS 15.1.1. You can verify this within Settings > General > About. Here's a link that'll show how to first back up, then Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Take care!
