I am trying to clear the search history from an iPhone SE but the instructions above are not working. How can I clear it?

I am trying to clear the search history from an iPhone SE but the instructions given are not working. I can go where it says but when I get there the link is not highlighted, (grayed out). When I go to Safari itself and try to clear it that way, the "clear" link is also grayed out. How do I fix this? This SE is my son's phone and I want hime safe.
