Is apple getting people to pay $10 per month for imusic (or whatever it is now called) because it is impossible to access iTunes without it?

iTunes is an application. It is free to use. On a computer* it is a media player. On a mobile device it is a portal to the iTunes Store. If you want to play music on a mobile device, use the Music app.

You only have to pay if you wish to use Apple Music services.

*Actually, except for Windows and old Macs, iTunes no longer exists and has been replaced by the Music app.
