Missed Icloud payment

I had an accident and was hospitalized for the whole month of November 2020. When I got out of the hospital my iphone was destroyed. I went to set up on a new iPhone, but I couldn’t remember my password. The password recovery said I had to wait a month so I put it off and made a new account. While I was locked out of the old account I couldn’t update my payment method for iCloud storage(50gb), so my subscription ended. Now I have the old account recovered, but it now has the free 5gb of storage. Which does have 2gb of backed up photos, but I thought I had more than 5gbs of back up. (Which is why I had to purchase the 50gb plan). My question: What happens to your iCloud storage when you miss payment? How long do they hold onto the backup if you haven’t paid?

You would need to contact Apple support about that -> Official Apple Support

All we can show you is the terms of use for iCloud -> Legal - iCloud - Apple which only say:

The applicable fee for an upgraded plan will take effect immediately; downgrades to your plan will take effect on the next annual or monthly billing date. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE TIMELY PAYMENT OF ALL FEES AND FOR PROVIDING APPLE WITH VALID CREDIT CARD OR PAYMENT ACCOUNT DETAILS FOR PAYMENT OF ALL FEES. If Apple is unable to successfully charge your credit card or payment account for fees due, Apple reserves the right to revoke or restrict access to your stored content, delete your stored content, or terminate your Account. If you want to designate a different credit card or payment account or if there is a change in your credit card or payment account status, you must change your information online in the Account Information section of iCloud; this may temporarily disrupt your access to the Services while Apple verifies your new payment information. We may contact you via email regarding your account, for reasons including, without limitation, reaching or exceeding your storage limit of your selected plan.”

Since you were able to recover the AppleID they clearly did not terminate your account, but by now, a year later, they may have deleted your data. Only Apple can tell you what the situation is though as no users here on the user forums would know or could find out.
