I just found my apple tv 3rd generation and I want to play movies on my smart tv. Does this module allow me to do this on a smart tv? I cannot use apple tv+ on this tv. also what specific cords do I need?

Thank you for answering this. I have lost / misplaced the remote control for this device. Do you think it's worth buying one online? I have to check the model of the tv, as it's at my daughter's house. I might have more questions tomorrow :)
You may buy a replacement remote from Apple or other resellers.
The replacement remote will have to be linked to the box, or else it will ignore commands.
