This has happened a few times where my monitor goes black. It comes back with a reboot, but I'm wondering if there is a cable problem or monitor problem. I don't think it's the OS or CPU, but I'm no experth.

I think it is more likely that you have a faulty cable/loose connection. Try with another cable/laptop/monitor to locate the actual problem. I hope this helps!
Thank you. Process of elimination had me also thinking it was a cable/connection. It was. I have a fancy pants monitor that's hard wired, so a new cable will take some doing. The good thing is that all I have to do is unplug & replug to fix the problem ... much better than having to reboot.
