How do I get icons to appear in the Favorites Icon Bar in Safari 15.1

Right now the favorite bar shows only the name of the bookmark. I know that I had icons at some time in the past, but having to force quit Safari 15.1 recently, the favorite bar now only displays the name. I searched and could not find a solution that works so far. If I click on the + icon to the right of the search bar, is shows the Favorites as icons. I even went so far as to delete the bookmark icon cache as some suggested and all that did was delete all the bookmark icons. There must be a simple way to restore the favorites bar so it shows only icons. I have no idea why there isn't an option to show as icon, name, or icon and name. That is probably asking too much and right now I would be satisfied with just the icons.

Any suggestions on how to remedy this?

New issue. I am sure they were there before I had to force close Safari for non response issue.

That option is no longer in the Tabs preference

No placeholders

The icons do repopulate on the tabs but not on the Favorites bar.

I see no favicon on the favorites bar in Monterey Safari.app.

— tabs only you have the icons.
