Why do I get messages that say someone liked an image instead of seeing the emoji?

Hi MJVizslaMom,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. We understand you have some questions about iMessage. We're happy to share some information to help.
It sounds like what you're seeing is when someone replies to a message with an expression. Typically you would see "[Contact] loved/liked "your message" and then when you open the conversation you'll see a heart, thumbs up/down, Ha or other emotion in the corner of the message they replied to with an expression. See more on that here: Use message effects with iMessage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Thanks

You can reply to a specific message in conversations with one person and in groups.
Maybe someone liked it in conversation
I only get [Contact] liked the message. I don't get the heart or the thumbs up. Everyone else does but I just get a series of messages that so and so liked it, this person liked it, that person liked it. Is there some way that I've disabled the emojis displaying on incoming texts in a group message?
Hi MJVizslaMom,
Thanks for following up. It sounds like this could be happening in a group message, is that correct? If so, does someone in that group use an Android device? This can easily be identified if the messages in that conversation are green. If that's the case, that would be why you're only seeing the notification.
Does this happen when messaging with another iPhone user as well? If so, what model device and iOS version are you using? You can find that in Settings > General >About.
Thanks
