Issues with selecting default apps

I had a program called pdf expert on my mac and it seems to be the default app for opening pdfs.

I've deleted from my applications folder, but it still tries to open pdfs. The only copy of the app is on a TimeMachine drive and I presume it is being invoked from there.

GetInfo on a pdf shows that Preview is the default app (which is what I want), but nevertheless pdf expert tries to open when I double click a pdf.

Seems to me this program is close to a virus.

PDF Expert has already been deleted. The only copy on my Mac is on a TimeMachine backup

PDF Expert is clearly running from the TimeMachine Backup. If I try and eject the TimeMachine volume I get the message:

"The disk "Timemachine 4GB" couldn't be ejected because "PDF Expert" is using it."

You can always re-install the application—make the change as recommended from the Readdle team within the app; then delete it.

You can force Quit any app from the Activity Monitor.app if that is an issue.

Activity Monitor User Guide for Mac - Apple Support

If inclined you can root out all the cruft left behind manually—

In most cases you can search for the items whose names contain PDF Expert or Readdle in the locations:

~/Library,

~/Library/Caches,

~/Library/Preferences,

~/Library/Containers,

~/Library/Application Support,

~/Library/Saved Application State,

~/Library/LaunchAgents,

~/Library/LaunchDaemons,

~/Library/PreferencePanes,

~/Library/StartupItems

You can try a Safeboot to clear system cache files, reboot as normal to compare your results.

If you are not interested in using the app, please make sure to change the default PDF viewer by opening the app and going to ‘PDF Expert’ then ‘Preferences’ on your menu bar and change the ‘Default PDF Reader’ to Preview. Also, please make sure to delete PDF Expert from your Mac: close the app, then open Finder, select the Applications tab, find PDF Expert there and drag-and-drop it to the Trash Bin. Just below that is the Change ALL able to be invoked or is is greyed out. Although Preview is the Default for that PDF file all other may not yet been adjusted to Preview as the default.
