Enabling Face ID for Apple Wallet

I have just added my credit card to Apple Wallet, and I verified in my settings that Face ID is enabled for it, but whenever I close and re-open the app to test if it will prompt me to verify my Face ID, it does not. It just opens straight to my list of cards, which is concerning. I can also open the credit card without any authentication.

I am not sure if the prompt will only appear when I am about to make a purchase, but from what I can tell, the screen I see right now is the same one on the Apple Support page. Is anyone else having this security issue with using Apple Pay?

Thank you for your response!

I had expected that opening the wallet itself should give me a Face ID prompt (and I still think it should 👀), but I was indeed able to use my Face ID to verify a purchase through a public transit app just now.

you are not having problems with the Wallet app. The Wallet app "unlocks" when you open your device using Face ID. to test for Apple Pay usage, double click the side button and it should ask for your Face ID to verify the (fake) purchase request.

Face ID authentication occurs when making a payment for a secure transaction. 
