Can there be internal damage because of rough handling?

Someone banged my iPhone several times pretty hard against the back of a wooden chair (the edge of the iPhone against the edge of the chair's back).

My iPhone's in a soft TPU case and there doesn't seem to be any physical damage. The phone's also working fine.

But could there have been some internal damage? To the battery maybe that may show up later?

It's a new phone. Thanks!

The only way to be 100% sure there are nothing wrong internally is to handle your device to Apple for inspection.

But, I am pretty sure your iPhone is OK. As long as you don't see any external physical damage and everything is functional.

Just give your phone some shakes next to your ears you will hear no loose moving parts. iPhones build quality is a thing and I always say it is an armored mini tank in your pocket. Also the case helped protecting the phone so again don't worry all is good.
