'Decompression failed' when downloading photos

So I've been trying to reduce the amount of photos in iCloud due to running out of space. I started doing it through Photos on Mac and it worked fine for the first 2000 pics but then I started getting error messages after downloading the first 50 or so pics of the next batch. So then I tried to be smart and logged in to iCloud through Safari and download them this way. Doing it through Safari creates a zip file and again it worked fine for a thousand or so pictures but then I started getting 'decompression failed' errors and the download aborts in error. What can be the cause of my issues? I tried gradually reducing the amount of pics that I try to download at a time, thinking there may be a corrupted file but there seems to be no method to the madness..

Greta step as smaller batches may help location the image or file that is causing the issue. However, we recommend testing compressing while booted to safe mode.
