files won't sort alphabetically in column view

In Finder how can I sort alphabetically in column view?

Files sort alphabetically only in list view.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.12

Been there, done that.... to no avail.

Sorting by name is not possible in column view.

Not only that, wouldn't it be nice to be able to sort by KIND, then NAME? or KIND and then NAME?

Alphabetical sorts are only possible in list view, which makes the Finder useless to me.

If Finder is corrupted, can I download a working version somewhere?

I can sort by name in column view, so it is very much possible.

You can group by kind, then sort within groups by name.

If you sort by kind without grouping, the items within each glob of kinds will be sorted by name.

Choose "Name" in the Sort By menu/View Options.

If you are clicking in the toolbar, a regular click will select Group By.

To get Sort By, hold down the Option Key.

You can sort by Kind and then Name. You need to use the View ➙ Show View Options menu and select Kind and Name in the resulting pane:
