When will an iPhone show notification for an Apple Watch unlock?

Hello,

when does an iPhone get a notification for your Apple Watch being unlocked. I think my boyfriend is going through it but I might be too far for it to notify me.

The only time you will see a notification on the iPhone when the Watch is being unlocked, is if the Watch and iPhone are in proximity of each other. If they are not, you would not see a notification about the Watch being unlocked, since it would be unlocked using the screen passcode, not the iPhone.
