Pink lines of death on MacBook Air 2019
5 pink lines on MacBook Air 2019 screen
I recently had the issues where our 1.5 year old MacBook Air started acting up, giving us the pink screen pattern ( see image). We contacted apple twice over call, tried all the resetting step for SMC / PRAM. However, none of that worked. We were asked to make a visit and also given a quotation for screen replacement @$700. Since we are out of warranty.
I was sure we didn’t do anything to the device to have a screen replacement and I am sure had I had sent even are replacement the issue would not have been resolved.
I don’t think anyone cares about devices of or warranty and the quotes are subtle way of saying go away.
Anyways, I read through several forums and feared this could be the flexgate issue. Which is common on the big brother models- MacBook Pro for the same year (mind this 2019 MacBook Air is a small update to 2018).
Here is the issue,
- On boot the pink line patterns would appear
- They would change in sometime, it gave us the impression that the angle of the lid was causing the pattern. At this point I was sure that it could be flexgate
- However, one thing that was strange- after the screen was woken for 0.5 sec the screen worked fine and went back to patterns. Even black and white lines
- Determined that this could be a 50:50 situation since I was sure that the device is not old and used very delicately, flexgate should not appear so soon
Here is what I did the next two days,
- Every sleep and wake cycle, I cleaned the device
- I deleted the partition completely
- I did a fresh install
All of the above by waiting the screen to sleep, press wake up button and then making my move.
Again, there must be a better way of doing this, I am not a tech savvy person. To my surprise everything worked out just fine. The device is back to normal and it works like a charm. No flexgate no screen replacement no hardware issue.
It’s just sad that such expensive devices die-off and there is limited support available from apple.
