sound preferences do not show internal speakers or internal mic

I have been having this problem for a good minute now. When I go to sound preferences it should say "MacBook Pro Speakers" for default output or "MacBook Pro Microphone" for default input. But sometimes it doesn't show. So if I go to Discord and check my input/output devices, it is greyed out indicating that there is no input or output, not even default show. So a temporary fix I found is just restart my device but I don't want to keep doing that. Is this a problem with the new MacOs?

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

MacBook Pro, 13-inch, Mid-2012, — MacBookPro9,2 — OS 10.15.7

Recommended solution did not work...still no internal speakers as a sound output option.

This is a relatively new problem never seen before, and appears to have likely started after an Apple system or security "Update" sometime within the last few months (??) — I'm not sure when, but it wasn't that long ago when I was video chatting on iMessage and video-conferencing over both Skype and Google in recent months.
