My iPhone 13 video is "not supported"?

I shot some short videos today with my new iPhone 13. I'm playing one of these videos in the Photos app on my MacBook Pro when I noticed one of those warning triangles up in the corner. I hovered my mouse over the triangle and saw "Unsupported file format."

Huh? I shot this video on an Apple device, and now my Apple laptop tells me it's "unsupported" ... ? I hope someone can unconfused me on this one. The video plays just fine, or so it seems.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 12.0

Hi

Probably you have HDR enabled on your phone. Older macbooks (I don't know how old yours is) are unable to play HDR video from the newer phones (12/13). You will need to turn of HDR in your phone camera settings if you want to play the videos on your mac.

This page suggests 2018 or later, though it reads just as being able to display HDR on the built in screen. Presumably it is "Down DRd to non HDR.

Perhaps "non supported" just means the HDR cannot be displayed.

Ah–ha! My 2016 won’t support HDR, but it looks great anyway. Thanks!

Hm-m-m … Well, my MacBook Pro is a 2016 model, and these “nonsupported” videos are playing just fine. I don’t see a problem, beyond this odd little error message.

My 2016 MacBook Pro runs on the latest: Monterrey. And, as I mentioned earlier, the videos play with no trouble. That’s the puzzle—if they play, why the warning? Just weird.

What system are you running? It takes High Sierra (10.13) or newer to be able to use the HEVC format from the new iPhones.

There's a HEVC converter available at the App Store. It'll convert the HEVC format to mp4 which you should be able to use.
