ICloud rejecting banking emails

I have an ongoing issue receiving banking emails from Bank of America to my iCloud account.

I make sure my email is entered correctly but the next day I will receive an alert, when I log into the BofA website, saying that they’re having trouble sending emails to my address. I double check again and the cycle repeats.

I figured it was a problem on their end, but I enter a different email from a competitor and it works perfectly.

A quick web search shows that my issue is fairly common.

what are the iCloud email servers looking at that causes them to reject so many valid emails?

Surely Apple is aware of this, it makes iCloud email services risky to use.

If I’m missing an obvious fix that will allow me to use iCloud emails with my bank, please clue me in.

Hey there AppleBoy123,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities. We understand you're having issues with receiving certain emails sent to your iCloud account, and we'd be happy to get you pointed in the right direction.

To get started, do you by chance have any email rules enabled that may be blocking the emails that are coming in from Bank of America?

If not, try setting up a rule to sort emails sent from Bank of America to a particular folder and see if that's able to help: Set up rules to filter email in Mail on iCloud.com - Apple Support

If still having issues with receiving emails with a rule set up, and if you haven't already, we would recommend reaching out to Bank of America's support, who may be able to provide some additional information on what's causing the issue.

Take care.

Hi, thanks for the response. I have, in fact, tried both methods over the months. Neither way makes a difference, which is not surprising, since the messages from Bank of America indicate they know they can't reach me, which is why they tell me there is a problem with that particular email address. BofA wouldn't know that I'm not receiving messages unless they had the message bounce back to them - it's the only way they would know. So, I think it's a safe assumption that iCloud servers are bouncing the message back to them. BofA isn't asking for read receipts, so it's not that, either.

As I mentioned previously, a quick web search shows that the problem is happening to other people, and it's pretty safe to assume that we are not all email neophytes who wouldn't think to look in either the junk folder or a folder we use rules to put the message into. It's definitely not stuck in my junk folder or in an unknown folder on my system.

Thank you. I did speak with Apple Support, they see nothing wrong on their end, but they wouldn’t go as far as to look at the mail server logs to see why it was happening or if the bounce was from their servers. They checked the alias, and said it passes all their checks.

Spoke with Bank of America, and they were no help. Tech support rep said she was transferring me to someone else who may be able to help, but instead just sent me to the top of their phone menu - bailed on the call. Their DMARC says to bounce the message if it fails their DMARC policy - that’s the only thing I think may be happening, or maybe the address somehow got blacklisted on their end, or for some reason the characters in my alias are triggering a filter. As I said, BofA refuses to look into the why, they just say it’s not their problem.

What’s weird is that when BofA sends me an email from billpay@billpay.bankofamerica.com to the alias, I receive it. However, if they send me an email from onlinebanking@ealerts.bankofamerica.com to the same alias, they say it is undeliverable.

A very frustrating experience, since I can’t convince anyone at either Apple or Bank of America to take a look at their own logs to find out what the problem is.

I’m at my wit’s end.
