I had the battery service on an iPad 5 wifi 128GB last January. For most iPad variants, you back up your iPad to a computer (preferably) or to iCloud and then wipe the device as you would for selling it. Send it to Apple and their usual procedure is they send you a refurbished iPad of the same model and specs. Most of the time the do not open them.

I took my iPad to a UPS store on a Friday morning and the replacement was delivered the following Wednesday and has worked perfectly since.
