Carplay freezing between MacBook Air and iPad Air

I frequently use screen sharing... carplay... handoff... the "additional screen" mechanism between my MacBook and iPad for school as its nice to have a second monitor to work off of. Since updating my MacBook to Monterey 12.0.1, I have had a problem with my iPad display "freezing" and thus becoming unresponsive.

I've tried updating the iPad, restarting both devices, turning handoff off and on (both devices), turning bluetooth off and on (both devices) and I've had no luck.

Any advice how to prevent the freezing from happening? Much appreciated.
