2013 Retina MacBook Pro sleep dim animation broken macOS Big Sur

Hello,

A few months back I updated my MacBook pro to Big Sur from Catalina. A couple things I noticed right off the get-go, my screen no longer dims when closing the lid or clicking sleep. I used to be able to see the apple logo on the back dim as I close the lid (not super slow, but the typical apple sleep animation.) I also noticed that my firmware did not update as I still have the old boot chime and old icons in the boot menu. Not sure if that is why my sleep animation is not working or what has happened. Something to note is that the mac does play the sleep animation perfectly when on the lock screen, just not when unlocked.

Any suggestions?

Am aware on Monterey macOS 12.0.1 that After Market SSDs are having issues installing Monterey at all. In you case - the WD SSD may have come interplay wit the Boot ROM not getting upgraded and thus , still functional, maybe missing elements that are offered had it been upgraded.

Monterey Specific

There are reports appearing on the ASC Forums regarding failed installation of Monterey on older Qualifying Apple Computers. In most cases this is related to having a NON Apple Original internal drive ?

The EFI Boot ROM included in Monterey is verifying for Original Apple Drive and if not found , may Balk or fail to upgrade to Monterey.

Reports indicate the EFI BOOT ROM is Required to Flash the Computer and is a  requirement for a Successful Monterey Installation.

Again, in reference to Monterey macOS 12.0.1 as the model and may or may not apply Big Sur macOS 11.6.1.

Switch out the WD SSD for the original Apple SSD and re-run the full installer of Big Sur.

What is hoping to occur is the Installer will see the original Apple SSD and then apply the EFI Boot ROM to the computer.

This has been use several time for those having similar issue on attempting the Monterey upgrade - successfully should be mentioned..

One done, one can switched back the WD 500GB SSD and all should continue to function. Hopefully the EFI Boot ROM was installed.

Suggest doing a Time Machine Backup before any attempting. For good measure and insurance - if possible on a separate external drive make a Bootable Clone
