iphone screen works and slowly deteriorate

When I turn on my phone it works just fine but within 10 secs I start to se both vertical and horizontal lines that gets more and more intense by the seconds. Also the touch function gets worse over time and finally stops working. Normally within a minute. Strange thing is that if I turn the screen off and start over it works just fine again and the procedure starts over. I had the battery replaced a month ago but this started just a few days ago. Really annoying.

Was this done by an Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Center?

Yes. Return there and seek their assistance.
No. You had an unauthorized repair performed that likely is causeing these issues. Apple can no longer assist you with this iPhone.

I know that Apple won't help me with this phone, it's over five years old. (And my nearest Apple Store is a 4 hour drive.) My question is: What is wrong and can it be fixed? I really like this phone: good size, latest IOS and headphone jack.

The issue is that the problem with the iPhone may well have originated with its previous unauthorized repair. Can it be fixed? Likely not.
