cannot open sim card tray

My iphone 12 mini does not show any carrier service all of a sudden. I've tried to open the sim card tray to check the sim card but it won't open. I have only had the phone a few weeks, no drops and it has a case. Other ways to open rather than with a paper clip? Don't want to force it.
